Reasons for Talking in One's Sleep
I once heard a joke about a male college student who talked in his sleep and almost revealed his banking password. In reality, people tend to divulge their inner secrets while sleep talking. Sleep talking, also known as somniloquy, refers to the various behaviors such as speaking, crying, and laughing that people exhibit while dreaming during sleep. Usually, sleep talking consists of momentary shouts, but it can also involve coherent speech or even sustained conversation with an awake person.
This demonstrates that sleep talking is not necessarily gibberish. It has been emphasized many times that the brain is not completely at rest during sleep. Certain parts of the brain's nerve cells remain active, and sometimes they are highly active. Human sleep consists of cycles of light sleep and deep sleep, repeated three times, with increasing time periods.
The third cycle represents the deep sleep phase, during which sleep talking occurs. If the neurons responsible for language remain in an excited state during this phase, sleep talking is a natural occurrence. Since the linguistic cells store information related to daytime conversations, the content of sleep talking is coherent and follows a logical pattern. It is a form of normal thinking.
Sleep talking can occur at any stage of sleep and is indicative of certain qualities, serving as a reference for physical pathology. People who frequently talk in their sleep often have excessive internal heat or liver heat. External factors such as excessive work or study pressure and extreme mental stress can also contribute to sleep talking. Therefore, individuals who frequently talk in their sleep should pay attention to rest and adjust their work and lifestyle accordingly. By reducing stress, maintaining a balanced diet, the situation will gradually improve. If a child frequently sleep talks, it may be a symptom of childhood neurosis.
