According to a recent warning issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), taking medications such as Viagra for erectile dysfunction may lead to hearing loss.

The FDA mentioned Pfizer's Viagra, Lilly's Cialis, and GlaxoSmithKline's Levitra as the drugs in question. Additionally, Pfizer's drug Revatio, which is similar in composition to Viagra and used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension, is also included in the warning list.

The FDA based its warning on the investigation of several clinical cases but has not yet confirmed these drugs as the direct cause of hearing loss.

The three pharmaceutical companies mentioned are cooperating with the FDA's investigation and claim that their products are safe and reliable.

Penney Soublière, Vice President of Pfizer, stated that when Viagra received FDA approval in 1998, the drug's instructions already included potential side effects, including the possibility of hearing loss. Clinical test results showed that the probability of hearing loss occurring after taking the medication was less than 2%.

Data provided by Pfizer indicates that nearly 30 million men have used Viagra since 1998, and the drug generated sales of $450 million in the most recent quarter of 2007.

In 2005, the FDA issued a warning stating that erectile dysfunction drugs like Viagra carried a risk of blindness.
